Breeding our bettas

Currently we are breeding our female halfmoon plakat with male halfmoon. This is our first time breeding bettas so hopefully we will succeed.
This is Chegal our female halfmoon plakat, see how beautiful she is.

And here is the man, Oranje our male halfmoom. God isn't he's beautiful? Hopefully their fries would turn out to be beautiful like the two of them.

Well anyway, they had already spawn and we had remove Chegal before Oranje attack her again(Male betta are protecting the eggs from being eaten by the female, i think). And now Chegal is safe in her own tank and Oranje is guarding the bubblenest. Can't wait to see the fries hatched from the eggs. We are so excited to see their babies. Will update soon if the eggs has successfully hatch.:)

The history of betta

Here is a brief history on fighting fish. I gather the information from several resources on the internet.

The common name for Fighting Fish is Siamese Fighting Fish which are also scientifically known as Betta Splendens. It is originally found in Thailand. They also can be found in Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia and also in Brunei. They could be found in the shallow paddy rice fields, murky ponds and even in a slow moving stream.

About 150 years ago, Siamese people started to fight Bettas. It is so popular that the King of Siam started to regulated and taxed it. The king of Siam then gave a pair of fighting fish to Dr Theodor Cantor. He bred and studied them for several years and published an article on it an named them Macropodus Pugnax. The fishes are later renamed as Betta Splendens by Mr Tate Regan.

The original wild fighting fish are dull with greenish brown body colour compared to today's fighting fish which are colourful and have different fins type. After about 80 years, breeders across the world have developed many strains of fighting fish that you can see today.

This blog is intended to promote the beauty of Fighting Fish a.k.a Betta Splendens especially for the folks in Brunei Darussalam.

Fighting Fish may be a low maintenance fish. This fish can live in a small jar or cup but this is not the proper way to handle such beauty. It will take more than that to look after this fish. This fish is actually a delicate and sensitive creature. One improper care to this fish, and it may result to the fish to be sick. So be careful when keeping such fish, you don't want it to die just after a few months you bought it.

Anyway, about myself, I am just a newbie who wants to share my knowledge and show my beauties to the people out there. I'm quite new to this fighting fish, but I have learnt quite a bit. So be sure to share any comments, thoughts, tips and tricks to look after your Betta. More pictures will be uploaded soon...
